I have recently finished watching season two of The Bear. I am a little late to this party, so I am not going to surprise too many with recommendation, as it is a universally acclaimed show … it has already won many industry awards. The Bear is an American comedy-drama television series created by Christopher Storer, starring Jeremy Allen White as Carmy Berzatto, an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to manage the chaotic kitchen at his deceased brother’s sandwich shop. The supporting cast includes Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott and Matty Matheson.
The series has received a great deal of critical acclaim, for its writing, directing, acting, and production values, as well as its deep and complex subject matter and themes. The Bear is a multi-award winning show with Primetime Emmy Awards (Outstanding Comedy Series and acting wins for White, Moss-Bachrach, and Edebiri) and Golden Globe Awards (acting wins for White and Edebiri, Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2024).
Although it falls into the genre of comedy-drama, I watch it as a drama with a twist of some dark comedy themes, given the depth of the storylines. Although Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri have been recognised with acting industry awards, the quality of the acting (main, recurring and guest stars) runs very deep, along with the writing that handles many life themes including family, dysfunction, suicide, challenges of relationships, camaraderie, and discovering success and passion in life. It is also great to see Oliver Platt in a recurring role, and some wonderful guest appearances from Jamie Lee Curtis, Olivia Colman, Molly Ringwald and John Mulaney. At the time of writing, the show has been renewed for Seasons 3 and 4 dues to come to our streaming services starting 2024.
Premise
A young chef, Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, inherits his family’s Italian beef sandwich shop after the suicide of his older brother. He comes home to Chicago to run it, leaving behind his world of working in Michelin star restaurants. He is left to deal with his brother’s unresolved debts, a rundown kitchen, and an unruly staff, while dealing with his own pain and family trauma.
